Our founder, Mac McQuown, was a visionary man in countless ways. After helping develop the first index fund at Wells Fargo, and California’s fledgling fine wine industry with Chalone and Carmenet, Mac established Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards and Winery with his wife Leslie in 2004. His commitment to world-class quality, sustainability, and innovation has guided our operations since inception.

While Mac is no longer with us, his legacy and brilliance live on in every bottle.

Our founder, Mac McQuown, understood the importance of terroir in world-class winemaking. He sought out uniquely refined vineyard sites in Sonoma County, and worked tirelessly to ensure they were tended with organic, sustainable means. Our minimal intervention approach aims to capture the essence of these distinctive sites, and share a story of place and time in every bottle.

Sustainability at Stone Edge Farm

The Vine of Life symbol on our label represents the McQuown family’s reverence for nature and our ironclad commitment to soil, water, air, and energy conservation. Our founder Mac McQuown grew up working summers on his uncle’s farm in Illinois, farming organically and sustainably before we used these terms to describe it. There was no garbage because nothing was wasted. This experience informs Stone Edge Farm today – from our decisions in the vineyard and winery, to the proprietary Microgrid that fuels our 16-acre family farm.

Embracing Innovation

Nature’s ingenious systems inspire our innovation and elevate the quality of our wines. With regenerative and organic farming methods, we cultivate fruit of extraordinary purity and finesse without depleting the land, ecosystem, or essential water resources.

Our property near the Sonoma square is a demonstration farm of what is possible. Over 30 sensors monitor water usage, alerting us of leaks or malfunctions, and enabling us to minimize consumption. The evolving, open-source technology of our farm’s MicroGrid empowers us to store energy indefinitely, access it instantly, and export it to the grid – reducing the farm’s carbon footprint below zero, with the goal of further lowering it as much as possible.
